Cornbread Cafe

Hard to imagine comfort food (Southern fried and BBQ) being gluten free, soy free, vegan, or made from wheat meat, tofu and tamari. However, Cornbread Café does it, and does it well! Located on the Oak Street side of the brick house (formerly Briggs Photography Studio) at 13th and Oak, the cafe provides a cosy, plant-sheltered place to enjoy your food if you wish. Some of the specialties include Southern Fried Tofu, Phish (local Surata tofu breaded), BBQ Pull-A-Parts (house made Seitan (wheat meat) swimming in a sweet & smoky BBQ sauce, Mac unCheese (sauce is made of a blend of raw cashews, nutritional yeast and is gluten free and can top gluten free noodles). Their Mashed Taters ‘n Gravy is made from fluffy mashed potatoes topped with a cashew based, very flavorful gluten-free gravy. This comfort food didn’t leave out them vegetables neither—Uncle Todd’s Mess O’Greens is made of sauteed to order spinach delicately seasoned with a mixture of Earth Balance, soy sauce, lemon juice, and agave nectar. And, The Sassy Slaw (because they like to use the word sassy) is a colorful purple slaw made with Vegenaise, evaporated cane juice, apple cider vinegar, black pepper and celery seed. Oh, and don’t forget to try the Cornbread!
